Coastal
habitat restoration, towards good practice
The good practice
guide provides an information resource for operating authorities
and other practitioners and guides them as to how they can deliver
habitat restoration and re-creation works. It refers to existing
works and demonstration sites that address individual coastal habitats
such as sand dune, shingle ridge, saline lagoon, salt marsh, mudflats,
reed beds and grazing marsh; and identify best practice in the re-creation
and restoration of these habitats.
Much work already
exists on the specific European features covered by SAC and SPA
designations and how they are managed; this guide collates and reviews
such existing literature and management experience from the UK and
overseas. It identifies any gaps in current best practice for the
specified habitats and produce interim guidance based on existing
expert knowledge. It also refines such guidance based on feedback
from the North Norfolk Habitat creation schemes. It includes a description
of the planning process needed to deliver such schemes, including
the consent and approvals needed from government departments and
agencies and suggest current sources of grant and additional funding
that may be available to practitioners.
To assist in
the collation of data required, a series of three regional workshops
were held to obtain details of practical experience, promote discussion
of management techniques and identify key ecological criteria for
each of the habitats involved in the study. The end product is an
interactive manual which will enable habitat re-creation and management
to be advanced without the need for repeated technique trialling
and testing and unnecessary expenditure.
